Your privacy, in plain words
Pio has no accounts, no ads and no tracking across apps. We only use what we need to tell you which bird is singing.
Last updated: 20 October 2026
The short version: the sound you record is sent to our server to identify the bird. Your collection, badges and settings stay on your iPhone. We count app usage with a random, anonymous id that is not linked to you.
What we collect
- Audio clips. When you tap to listen, Pio sends a short recording to our identification server (birds.araujo.zip). It is used only to identify the bird and is not used to recognise voices or people.
- Location, if you allow it. Pio uses your approximate position to make identification more accurate for your region, to show where you heard each bird and to describe the habitat. You can say no and still use the app.
- Anonymous usage data. A random install id created on your device, the app version and platform, so we know how many people open Pio and identify birds. Like any website, our server also sees your IP address and the country it belongs to.
What we don't collect
- No accounts, names, emails or phone numbers inside the app.
- No advertising identifiers, no ads and no fingerprinting.
- We never sell your data or share it with advertisers.
What stays on your iPhone
Your bird collection (species, date, place name and the spot on the map), your badges, your language and a cache of bird pictures are stored only on your device. Recordings made offline wait on your iPhone until you are back online, and Pio sends you a local notification when they have been identified.
Other services
Bird pages show pictures and links from Wikipedia and eBird. When you open them, those sites apply their own privacy policies. Pio may also ask you to rate the app using Apple's standard review prompt.
Your choices
- Turn off microphone or location access at any time in iOS Settings → Pio.
- Deleting the app removes your collection and the anonymous install id from your device.
- To ask about or delete data held on our server, get in touch.
Children
Pio is suitable for everyone and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
